CLICK Presents: Color Speaks | Paintings by Michele Caplan
Opening Reception: Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, 6-8pm | Live jazz piano by Rob Fontana
Artist’s Statement:
Color is the language of emotion that makes sense of the world. The events of the last few years have heightened my need to translate emotion onto the canvas. I ask, “Where is hope?”; “In a world filled with injustice, is there a role for beauty?”; “What does the future hold?”
Process:
My work often evolves from an image from current events, a dream, a photo, or something connected with strong emotion. Initially, I experiment to express an emotion or an idea to condense and crystallize it. New ideas and images emerge as I paint, as a dialogue between emotions and formal aspects of the painting develop. I work quickly, often changing the palate, the proportions or other major aspects of the painting before the piece “settles”. Current themes include circles, garden images and raw abstracts.
History:
After a career in social work and health care administration, Caplan’s first foray into the art world presented itself in 1992 when her father, well known jewelry designer, Ed Wiener, died, and she was asked to complete some of his unfinished commissions. Caplan’s jewelry has been featured in major jewelry magazines and traveled to the Oscars. She began painting in 2006 to satisfy her interest in color and learn portraiture. She continue to work in both mediums.
